Friends of Scull Shoals
In November 2021, Dr. Glover brought his students out for a dig at Scull Shoals, a historic mill site located east of Atlanta.
They were following up on fieldwork done by a Georgia State University graduate student who had interned for Friends of Scull Shoals and had completed a GPR (ground-penetrating radar) survey of the site looking for the remains of Ft. Clarke, a fort dating to the late 1700s/early 1800s.
The students who came to watch got a lesson in how a dig works, met some enthusiastic participants and saw some interesting artifacts.
Frontier Faire at Ft. Daniel
Georgia State archaeology students took part in the 13th annual Frontier Faire at Ft. Daniel guided by Dr.Glover. Ft. Daniel is an early 1800s fort located in northern Gwinnett Co.
Georgia State students completed the excavation of a cold cellar (think early refrigerator) under one of the blockhouses at the fort.
They also excavated one of the trenches associated with the palisade around the fort. In the trench, adjacent to the blockhouse, they found a fairly intact plate, complete with the knife marks.
Along with the excavations, Anthropology students got to share their knowledge about archaeology with the interested members of the public who stopped by to check out the excavations.
