This spring break study abroad program introduced 10 students to the rich cultural history of the Yucatan Peninsula. The students visited several museums and archaeological sites maintained by the federal government (INAH) as well as some maintained by local communities. These sites provided, in an experiential way, an understanding and appreciation for past and contemporary Maya peoples, their achievements, and their struggles. The students spent a week walking among ancient Maya ruins while conversing with modern descendants of the people who built the pyramids and scholars who tried and understand what life was like for the people who inhabited these past places. Trip highlights included "behind the scenes" tours of Chichen Itza and Ek Balam with staff archaeologists, a visit to the community-run Punta Laguna monkey preserve and archaeological site, and a homestay with Maya families in Yaxunah. It was a unique experience that sparked the students' interest in archaeology and love of different cultures, past and present.
